Clarence Leung was presented with his life membership and commemorative plaque on 20th October, 2024. The following is a excerpt of the speech given at his endorsement:
What can we say about the enigma that is Clarence Leung – who seems never to have aged during his time with Waratah Brass. Clarence started in community banding at Cardiff Northlakes Band on cornet and his talent and dedication to his instrument was soon recognised, moving swiftly to the Principal Cornet chair. Clarence ‘helped out’ Waratah Brass for many years before switching his registration to ‘officially’ become a member of Waratah Brass (not that his commitment to Waratah was ever in question). In his work life Clarence is a Radiographer with Hunter New England Health and in his band life Clarence has been the driving force and leader of the cornet section of Waratah Brass for many years. Clarence, ultimate musician, happy to help out where required and has been known to switch between cornet, flugel and soprano, even at the one concert! As a cornet player, Clarence’s talent is unparalleled and, as you would all know, he is often called upon, as he will be today, to present a solo that really showcases his immense ability. Clarence has always been an active committee member, contributing in the chaotic, busy, frustrating role as band librarian. A true bandsman, often quiet and unassuming, unless of course, rehearsal is becoming a little chatty and unfocused. Clarence can always be relied upon to bring everyone back to the task at hand. Clarence is a role model for younger players and is happy to share his immense knowledge of all things cornet and brass band repertoire. A real band nerd! A true example of a great bandsman worthy of the awarding of Life Membership to Waratah Brass – Newcastle. Congratulations Clarence.
